Behind the Scenes: Scene Facts: 'Not without you'

  1. In real life there was concern that the davits might not be strong enough to lower the boats fully loaded, although they had in fact been tested under such a weight. The davits in the film, which can be seen flexing under the weight, were made by the same company as the real-life ones.

  2. Cal's line "Look, I have an arrangement with an officer on the other side of the ship," originally read, "There are boats on the other side that are allowing men in. Jack and I can get off safely. Both of us." Cameron explains, "I wanted to Cal's lie to be more specific so it would be more believable to Rose. A lie always works best when you're more specific."

  3. The gap between the lifeboats and the decks was actually quite far, with many of the actors being quite afraid of boarding them. Winslet remarked in her Titanic Diary that she was quite terrified of crossing the gap, and could only imagine how terrifing it was for the passengers on the real ship.

  4. After this scene was filmed, DiCaprio asked Cameron to shoot one "for the actors." With everyone unaware of what he had planned, DiCaprio lifted Winslet in the air when they embraced, and unleashed more emotion than any other take thus far. This became the shot in the movie.

  5. A deleted line was from a man who passes a note to a woman boarding a lifeboat. He says, "Please get this to my wife in Des Moines, Iowa."
