Often noted as a goof, Rose's "giving the finger" is actually current with the time period. This gesture dates back centuries, when the Romans first started using it as in insult to their enemies. It has also been argued that a lady of Rose's breeding would have never done this, but Cameron has shown Rose's rebellion from the beginning of the movie, starting with her smoking in the lunch room.
Workers in the Titanic's engine room would have had to wear thick protective clothing to shield them from the heat generated by the engines.
