Behind the Scenes: Scene Facts: Flying

|
- Winslet was so excited about the beautiful sunset that she was jumping up and down screaming at Cameron to being filming before it was too late.
- This scene was shot at different angles both against a natural sunset and against a "green screen" with the footage being combined to form the entire effect.
- The sunlight is clearly falling almost exactly straight across the ship from left to right. On the evening of April 14, the ship had in fact turned to almost a due west course, placing the actual setting sun almost
straight ahead and slightly to the right.
- The faces of Jack and Rose are lit from a different angle, though still from the left.
- In reality, it was next to impossible to climb up onto the bow and was blocked off from the public. Cameron knew this but wanted to place his characters there to have optimal viewpoints of her grandness.
- A line was cut from this scene to preserve the mood. Lookout Frederick Fleet points to Jack and Rose on the bow and says, "Wish I had those bleedin' binoculars," to his mate Reginald Lee.
- Most of this scene was shot between 3/20-22/97, the last day of principal filming.
- There is a report that a couple did do this on the Titanic when she sailed, but it is an unconfirmed report that Cameron didn't know anything about.
- The transition from the past to the present reminds the audience of the impending danger, loss and horror that is to come - both a temporal and emotional transition.
