Behind the Scenes: Scene Facts: Sketches on Deck

  1. The drawings were mostly by James Cameron, though other artists contributed including on-set painter Marilyn McAvoy.

  2. The entire scene was completely rewritten in preproduction using improvisations from Winslet and DiCaprio.

  3. When Jack is telling Rose about the lady he drew that sat at the bar wearing every piece of jewellery she owned, Jack said that they nicknamed her Madame Bijoux. Bijoux is French for jewels.

  4. The two stars had only a few hours to learn seven pages of dialogue.

  5. While Jack and Rose are walking on the promenade the day after he rescues her, a small hill with a building on it is visible over Jack's shoulder and above the ship.

  6. A scene precedes this one in which Rose comes down to the 3rd class general room and asks to speak to Jack. Fabrizio and Tommy, having told him just the day before to forget ever "getting next to the likes o' her" and unknowing that he'd saved her life, are stunned.

  7. A portion of this scene was cut out. It included several of Jack's sketches flying away in the wind, and then overboard. Read that portion

  8. Just before Rose shows Jack her engagement ring, over the railing waves are visible coming into the shore.

  9. This scene was used for Winslet's screen test and for DiCaprio and Winslet's screen test together. It was also used for the Oscar reel for Winslet's Best Actress nomination.

  10. The portrait of the one-legged prostitute has been said to resemble Suzy Amis (who plays Rose's granddaughter, Lizzy). Considering that Cameron was paired with Amis after the movie was released, this is a possibility.

  11. While Ruth, Molly, and the Countess walk past, the shot is handed over to Bruce Ismay and Captain E.J. Smith. They are having a conversation that was overheard by a first class woman, Elizabeth Lines, whose later accounts were used to create the dialogue.

  12. If you watch the movie in slow motion, you can catch a glimpse of the illusive "one legged prostitute."
