Jack Dawson was loosely based on writer Jack London, and on Jack Thayer, survivor if the Titanic, and the name has nothing to do with the J. Dawson that was a stoker on the Titanic, and is buried in Halifax. This was just a coincidence that was discovered AFTER the script was wrote.
The studios wanted McConaughey, Matthew, but Cameron insisted on DiCaprio, Leonardo.
