Her first role as Mary when she was a mere five years old set her on the path she still follows today.
Kate has appeared in numerous English television shows, after appearing in commercials. She was in first television show, Casualty, in 1986 as Suzanne. Kate's first major movie was in 1994 as Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures. Following this stunning portrayal, Kate had these parts in the following movies: Princess Sarah in A Kid in King Arthur's Court (1995); Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility (1995) earning Kate her first Academy Award nomination; Sue Bridehead in Jude (1995); Ophelia in Hamlet (1996); Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic (1997) earning Kate her second Academy Award nomination, making a new record for the youngest star to receieve two nominations so young; Julia in Hideous Kinky (1998); Ruth in Holy Smoke (1999); a voice over for Faeries (1999), Madeleine Le Clerc in Quills (2000); Hester in Enigma (2001); and Therese Raquin in Therese Raquin (2002).
