Cast and Crew: Kate Winslet

Kate Elisabeth Winslet, born on October 5, 1975, is someone whose star started burning brightly after the wake of Titanic. The English actress, who was born as the second child of five to her parents in Reading England, has always had the acting bug. Her first role as Mary when she was a mere five years old set her on the path she still follows today.

Kate has appeared in numerous English television shows, after appearing in commercials. She was in first television show, Casualty, in 1986 as Suzanne. After taking a break, Kate picked up with television shows again in Dark Season in 1991 as Reet and Get Back in 1992 as Eleanor Sweet, while attending acting school at the Redroofs in London.

Kate's first major movie was in 1994 as Juliet Hulme in Heavenly Creatures. Following this stunning portrayal, Kate had these parts in the following movies: Princess Sarah in A Kid in King Arthur's Court (1995); Marianne Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility (1995) earning Kate her first Academy Award nomination; Sue Bridehead in Jude (1995); Ophelia in Hamlet (1996); Rose DeWitt Bukater in Titanic (1997) earning Kate her second Academy Award nomination, making a new record for the youngest star to receieve two nominations so young; Julia in Hideous Kinky (1998); Ruth in Holy Smoke (1999); a voice over for Faeries (1999), Madeleine Le Clerc in Quills (2000); Hester in Enigma (2001); and Therese Raquin in Therese Raquin (2002).

Kate married Jim Threapleton in November of 1998, and are expecting their first child in September of 2000. Kate has stayed as far away from the limelight as possible since Titanic, but pops in and out of the news on a rare occasion. Recently, Kate and Jim announced their new production company, Telltale Productions, which will produce smaller British and English films. Their first production is due out in late 2001.
