Archibald Gracie IV, son of Archibald Gracie Jr., was born on January 17, 1879. He was married
once with four daughters, three dying very young and one dying shortly after her marriage. In 1912
Gracie left his daughter and wife at home to travel Europe. He had just finished his book,
"The Truth About Chickamauga" and wanted to take a vacation. Gracie boarded the Titanic in
Southampton with ticket number 113780, and occupied cabin C-51..
During the trip Gracie offered to protect three "unprotected" sisters with whom he was acquainted with
and their friend whom was traveling with them. The sisters were returning from burying their
fourth sister. Most of Gracie's time was spent during the trip reading and relaxing.
On April 14th Gracie woke up when the ship hit the iceberg. When he went into the hall and
noticed the engines were not running anymore he thought there could be trouble. When he arrived
on the boat deck he was informed by a fellow passenger that the ship had struck an iceberg and
the mailroom was already flooded. Knowing that this meant danger Gracie returned and brought
the sisters up to the boat deck. He eventually left them in Officer Moody's care to be
placed onto a lifeboat.
For the rest of the night Gracie offered his assitance to the officers in the loading of the
lifeboats. He helped Officer Lightroller load Lifeboat 2 and followed him to Lifeboat 4. When
arriving at Lifeboat 4 Gracie helped a pregnant teenage girl into the boat to later discover it
was the wife of J.J. Astor. Gracie then followed Lightroller to Collapsible D and lent the
officers his penknife to free the boat from the roof of the officer's quarters.
The ship began to sink beneath Gracie and he jumped from the ship into the ice cold waters.
He was sucked down with the ship as she sank but was able to free himself and float to the surface
with the aid of his lifebelt. Once on the surface Gracie clung to a wooden crate and
eventually paddled over to the partially sunken Collapsible B.
Gracie stayed on Collapsible B throughout the night standing up in a huddle with roughly 30
men. Lightroller was manning the boat and giving orders to the men to sway left or right to keep
the ship afloat. When the Carpathia arrived they realized they would not be able to paddle to the
ship and Lightroller whistled for the lifeboats to come over and aid the half frozen men.
By this time Gracie was so frozen he could not make the jump from the Collapsible so he had to
crawl into Lifeboat 12. When he finally boarded the Carpathia, he was settled in on the couch
while his clothes dried in the oven. Gracie sustained many injuries from the sinking, not
realized until he was on the Carpathia. After he got home he wrote the book "The Truth About
The Titanic" but would be unable to finish it as he was the third survivor to die in December of
1912. It is said that Gracie never fully recovered.
