Rose Down Under: Chapter 4

Rated G

based on some characters
and situations originated by James Cameron

Patrick stood out on deck, the wind streaming through his dark hair, his eyes open with excitement. Rose came along and leaned against the rail beside him. She found herself staring in awe towards the horizon.

"Welcome to Australia," he greeted Rose and turned to face her. She smiled happily and suddenly felt free. Free of her mother, Cal and her whole other way of life. Now she could be like Jack and nothing would stand in her way, not even a great expanse of open ocean.

On the edge of the horizon, Rose could easily see a patch of land, which seemed to call to her.

"That's part of the Great Diving Range. I live in the Blue Mountains. Whenever you walk into the heart of the bush, your breath is taken away by its peacefulness and beauty."

Rose sighed as she pictured the towering gums and smelt the strong smell of the eucalyptus.

"So where are you planning on staying?" Patrick inquired.

"I will find somewhere. I don't really care where.

"How about you stay with me for a while, until you get settled in?"

"I guess so. Until I get settled in. Thank you for all of this, I don't know where I would be without you." Rose smiled sweetly as the approaching land proceeded to get closer and closer.

By mid afternoon, the ship had docked in Sydney Harbour. This new country fascinated Rose. The new smells, environment, food and a whole new way of life.

"G'day miss. And where are you two off to?" the train ticket seller asked joyfully.

"Uh, the Blue Mountains please. One way." Patrick said and handed over some money.

"No wait, I'll pay for mine," Rose chirped in.

"It's ok. I would never be able to live with myself if I knew I had let a lady pay." Rose glared at him.

"Please!"

"Why do you want to pay? It is only a train ticket." The ticket seller glanced at them nervously and pretended to shuffle papers.

"I am starting my life again. I want to make all my decisions. It's only a train ticket, but it means a lot to me," her innocent eyes pleaded. Patrick sighed and took the money from Rose's hand.

"Happy now?"

"Yes thanks."

"Well, here it comes." Patrick picked up their heavy suitcases and walked towards the approaching train. Rose felt better with every step she took further away from her mother. Even over all the seas, she knew her mother was thinking of Rose, praying with all her might.

"Well Rose Dawson has never heard of a Ruth or Caledon Hockley. She only knows a Jack Dawson, and her home is Australia," Rose thought proudly.
