Kate Winslet Attends 'Iris' Premier
-----------------------------------
LONDON (AP) - Kate Winslet, a Golden Globe nominee for her role in movie "Iris," attended the film's British premier Sunday night, walking into the theater on the arm of her younger brother, Joss.

"My brother is my date tonight," said Winslet, 26.

Describing her role, Winslet said, "It is hard because Iris was such an intellectual, and I am not. And when you have Dame Judi portraying her in later life it is quite frightening, and you know there is a lot to live up to."

Winslet was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in the film by the 59th annual Golden Globes in Hollywood.

Walken chases 'Catch Me' role as DiCaprio dad
---------------------------------------------
By Chris Gardner

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Christopher Walken is negotiating to star in Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can" for DreamWorks Pictures.

Walken will play the father of Leonardo DiCaprio in the cat-and-mouse story based on the true-life memoirs of Frank Abagnale Jr., the youngest man to make the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List.

From 1964-66, Abagnale Jr., to be played by DiCaprio, successfully impersonated an airline pilot, doctor, assistant attorney general and history professor after getting introduced to the con business by his father (Walken).

Tom Hanks stars as the FBI agent on the hunt for Abagnale Jr.

'Shrek' is video monster of '01
-------------------------------
By Brett Sporich

"Shrek's" combined VHS and DVD sales surpassed all others last year, making it the best-selling home video since Paramount Home Entertainment's "Titanic," industry sources said. While Paramount officials have never announced combined retail and rental revenues or DVD-unit sales of James Cameron's epic film, the studio did announce that VHS sales of "Titanic" topped 25 million units.

Crowe in Fox "Master" plan
-----------------------------
By Michael Fleming

NEW YORK (Variety) - Russell Crowe is negotiating to star in 20th Century Fox's "Master and Commander," the Peter Weir-directed adaptation of the Patrick O'Brian book series.

After months of on-again, off-again discussions, Crowe appears poised to play Royal Navy Capt. Jack Aubrey, who is given his first command of a British sailing vessel sent to battle. Fox is aiming to shoot the film at Fox Studios Baja, the Mexico studio with the gigantic water tank built to house James Cameron's "Titanic."

DOUBLE STUFF

*Wallpaper by Corey

Quote: "I'm flying, Jack!"

URL of this issue's wallpaper:
http://www.back-to-titanic.com/dl/wall/waves/feb-mar02_flying.jpg

Why Corey chose this quote:
"I chose this quote because this is "THE LINE" from the movie. Out of all the quotes this is the line that is remembered most of all. For me, these three small words somehow capture that magic that I felt when seeing Titanic. The wonder, the amazement and the pure beauty that was discovered during that first viewing."

*Fact
If placed upright, the Titanic would have being taller than any of the buildings of her day. At 885 feet, she would have towered over the Washington Monument (555 ft), the Woolworth Building in New York (750 ft), and even the Grand Pyramid in Egypt (451 ft). To give an idea of how long 885 feet is you can line up 22 motor homes (40 ft long) or four 747 airplanes (231 ft long) to equal Titanic. Her height from the keel to the top of the funnels was 175 feet. Compare that to the Statue of Liberty at 151 ft from base to torch.

SCENE OF THE MONTH: Steerage Party

*Scene facts

1. The band is portrayed by Gaelic Storm of Santa Monica, California.

2. This scene was choreographed by Lynne Hockney, who was also the film's etiquette coach. Other than the principle actors, the scene boasts mostly professional dancers.

3. Rose pulls off her high heeled shoes to dance with Jack (note, the second in Rose's symbolic stripping of clothing).

4. This is another "foot shot" - a Cameron trademark.

5. Winslet, a trained dancer, required the least work with the choreographer; DiCaprio, the most.

6. Rose goes en pointe, and fascinates the crowd. This scene took a few days to accomplish, and a lot of work. Originally Cameron decided to hook Winslet into a harness and hoist her into the air. Unsatisfied with the way this appeared on film, Cameron tried everything in the book to accomplish this scene. Eventually a dancer was called upon to perform this scene, and she was spliced into Kate's body.

7. Winslet has stated that this scene was her favorite to film because it reminded her of her childhood. DiCaprio has stated that this was one of the worst.

8. There was a scene cut after this one where Jack walks Rose back to her cabin. On the way they see a shooting star and Jack remarks that his father believed that was a soul on its way to heaven. Because this scene was cut you miss the symbolism later in the movie when Rose is on the debris, she is looking at the stars and a shooting star can be spotted.

THE FLUB REPORT: Revealing What's Hidden
by Copal

Claim: "Near the beginning of the film when Cal gets out of the car at Southampton dock, the scaffolding that is supporting the "Titanic" is clearly visible in the distance behind him."
I thought I had watched Titanic closely, but I hadn't realized this before. And now that I know this flub is there, it seems very blatant. I flopped a picture from behind the scenes so it would show Titanic just like it is on screen for Exhibit A:

http://back-to-titanic.com/waves/flub/feb-mar02_scaffold_a.jpg

When you look past Cal as he steps out of the car, you can see it matches the scaffolding in Exhibit A.

http://back-to-titanic.com/waves/flub/feb-mar02_scaffold_b.jpg

http://back-to-titanic.com/waves/flub/feb-mar02_scaffold_c.jpg

This one is true.

Claim: "When Rose is about to jump off the ship, you can see Kate Winslet has a tattoo on her arm."
In a cut scene just before Rose's suicide attempt she rips off her necklace, takes down her hair, breaks her handmirror, and rips part of her dress. There is, indeed, a moon-like shape on her arm, but this is simply not a tattoo. Later in the movie we see this same arm when she disrobes for Jack and when they are in the Renault.
See the "tattoo" in Exhibit D:

http://back-to-titanic.com/waves/flub/feb-mar02_tattoo_d-suicide.jpg

See the lack of a "tattoo" in Exhibit E:
http://back-to-titanic.com/waves/flub/feb-mar02_tattoo_e-car.jpg
While commonly cited, this is not a true flub.
